(july 2012) the merk sable, after a few yrs of faithful service & several more yrs of kvetch & inconstant service was sent off to the great kboo donation click in the sky, or the cloud, or wherever the fuck the intertubes intertube. & after 6 wks of wandering the carlot wastes of ne 82nd. & mlk, & perusing the craigslists, we cut to the chase at portland rescue mission’s used car lot on ne halsey (just east of ne 82nd.) i would like to think that kboo got a kergillion dollars for the old bumpersticker alone. as this yr comes to a close, i look back on all the sturm und drang, the death of a car & the chase across used car lots & craig’s list to find a suitable replacement, upon an epic bout of food poisoning, on the various other hassles, & have to acknowledge some good things that happened: (1) after a several yrs of a rejection-rut, getting 3 works of fiction & 1 essay accepted for publication (& the other half got 2 essays accepted); (2) getting some treatment for a minor but chronic illness that is actually abating said chronic illness; (3) a grant that will allow us to pursue some gobq publishing projects in 2013 & beyond.

there was a recent article in wired about how bestbuy is righting itself so as to survive any post-retail big bog trends.

their idea of righting themselves is to not bother restocking their inventory, which they used to do daily. need those hp print cartridges? you’d be better off going to staples or office depot or even target—where they will at least have them in stock.

& they do everything they can to weasel their way out of any extended service warranties.

i used to consider them one of the few good retail outlets. but two recent things changed my mind. i have a service warranty on an android mobile phone, & they have done everything to weasel their way out of their obligations, effectively leaving me without phone service for at least a wk. they had said five to seven business days for expedited service, & then took another 2 days to ship the replacement part that they had not included with the device.

smart phones need batteries & best buy makes you order replacement batteries from best buy, & if they accidentally ship your replacement battery to geek squad that’s not their problem - it’s your problem. their idea of working on that problem is to tell to to order another batter from geek squad. and if you call geek squad for assistance with the problem, that’s not their problem - it’s your problem. they will spend as much time as possible trying to scold you or blame you before even finding out what the problem is, or asking you your name, or getting the service repair number or your account number, & - maybe - looking at the situation.

so don’t buy at best buy, & don’t trust their service warranties.

when they say geek squad, they mean circus geeks, not computer geeks.

Gobshite Quarterly

Gobshite Quarterly Release Party w/Shannon Wheeler, Richard Melo, Michael Shay; Publication Studio, 717 SW Ankeny, Fri March 23, 7 pm, free

Gobshite Quarterly is a political literary magazine that dubs itself “Your Rosetta Stone for the New World Order.” The journal—which began in 2003—delivers thoughtful, interesting work, and indeed some of its most appealing assets are the bilingual pieces printed side by side in their original language and translation.

Gobshite returns to print this month after long hiatus; issue 12 is a multi-national smorgasbord featuring work from Argentina, Denmark, Poland, Russia, and the US, including several pieces from Oregon.

Local contributors include Katherine Dunn, who writes about the true meaning of the word “fuck,” and Shannon Wheeler, who shares cartoons and sketches from a visit to Zucotti Park during the peak of Occupy Wall Street last year. Wheeler’s simple and humane observations from the protest tell a story of a community spawned from collaboration and resistance, and it is easily one of the more tolerable dispatches to emerge from last fall. Lidia Yuknavitch contributes an excerpt about a celebrity in a rehab center which, like most excerpts, promises a lot (the novel is coming, I’m sure).

The issue—which comes with a cover hand-printed by local print-on-demand house Publication Studio—runs 100 pages but sacrifices depth for brevity. It’s not a bad thing. The tone is proudly liberal with a few polite nods to the other side, and any touch of pretension is far outshined by the quality of the work. JACOB SCHRAER

This new issue marks multi-lingual Gobshite Quarterly’sreturn to print.
